Matt Sheppard has won nine modified track championships and 78 feature races at the Land of Legends Speedway, and this Waterloo racer considers this half-mile Canandaigua layout to be his home turf.
In Saturday night’s OktoberFAST 60-lapper for DIRT big-block modifieds, Sheppard blasted off the outside pole to lead from start to finish and rack up his 79th career LoL triumph and his 18th win in 2020. The victor picked up a $7,500 check for his efforts. Mat Williamson ended up second, with Mike Mahaney, Erick Rudolph, Billy Decker, Max McLaughlin, Larry Wight, Tim Fuller, Rocky Warner and Jimmy Phelps following.
Favored Steward Friesen had a rough night in the main event. His Halmar modified had major brake issues, and when Friesen was limping back to the pits, his modified was hit in the rear with considerable damage. With the OktoberFAST Series finale set for Weedsport on Sunday, Friesen’s team has its work cut out to get back into top running form.
While Sheppard won the big-block feature leading all 60 laps, Tyler Murray won the 30-lap sportsman finale leading just a quarter-lap.. The Hannibal driver ducked under leader Zach Sobotka on the fourth turn of the final lap and went home with the $2,000 first-place money.
KYLE LARSON SWEEPS NITTANY SHOWDOWN WEEKEND AT PORT ROYAL FOR 41ST WIN
Kyle Larson made a clean sweep of the Nittany Showdown special for World of Outlaws sprint cars Saturday night at the Port Royal (Pennsylvania) Speedway. His win in the 30-lap finale was worth $15,000 for this California racer, and it was his 41st feature triumph in 2020.
Brent Marks and Lance Dewease chased the victor to the checkered flag.
BOBBY SANTOS WINS TONY ELLIOTT MEMORIAL RACE IN INDIANA
Bobby Santos III won Saturday afternoon’s Tony Elliott Memorial pavement sprint car race at the quarter-mile banked Anderson (Indiana) Speedway. The event was dedicated to the memory of the former USAC sprint car champion who died in a plane crash.
WHELEN MODIFIED AND ISMA SUPERMOD CHAMPIONSHIP RACES SET FOR THOMPSON WORLD SERIES
Time trials and qualifying races for the 58th World Series of Stock Car Racing at the Thompson (Connecticut) Speedway were run Saturday afternoon. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title will be on the line in their 150-lap seasonal finale Sunday afternoon.
While six-time champion Doug Coby will start on the pole Sunday, point leader Justin Bonsignore needs to finish just 23rd or better to lock up his second Whelen modified title.
The ISMA supers ran their qualifying heats Saturday, with Kyle Edwards and Chris Perley picking up wins. Their final feature of the year is also Sunday on the five-eighth-mile Thompson track. Eighteen winged ISMA supers were on hand.
