Baldwinsville’s Jimmy Phelps is not only a top-notch modified stock car driver, but this Baldwinsville racer was also adept at drawing for position at Fulton Speedway’s OktoberFAST tripleheader Thursday night.
In the pre-race draw for positions, Phelps drew the pole for both the big-block modified and the 358 mod features. He then went out and won both main events for a $11,500 payday. The third feature of the night was a 30-lapper for DIRT sportsmen, and Matt Janczuk started on the pole in that race and led from start to finish for a $2,000 triumph. Andrew Buff and A.J. Miller were second and third respectively.
But the big news of the night was the huge field of 237 race cars that descended on the one-third-mile Fulton oval for this OktoberFAST special event. In all, 101 sportsman, 78 358 modifieds and 58 big-block DIRT machines jammed into the pit area of this Route 57 track.
The 40-lap 358 finale saw Billy Decker lead the first six laps off the outside pole. But Phelps caught him on the seventh circuit and sped to the $4,000 victory. Tim Sears Jr. followed Decker in third, with Mike Mahaney, Stewart Friesen, Erick Rudolph, Matt Sheppard, Pat Ward, Jusrin Haers and Andy Bachetti making up the top 10 finishers.
The 60-lap big-block finale saw Jimmy Phelps again start on the pole, and this time he led the race from start to finish and pocketed a nice $7,500 check for his efforts.
Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, New York, kept pressure on the victor all race but had to settle for the second position. Stewart Friesen was third, with Mat Williamson, Larry Wight, Chris Hile, Rocky Warner, Erick Rudolph, Billy Dunn and Jessey Mueller following.
