University of Pittsburgh Match Notes 

PANTHERS OPEN SEASON WITH TOP-FIVE WIN

–          Pitt opened the regular season with a top-five, 3-1 victory at No. 5 Notre Dame on Sept. 26.

–          The fourth-ranked Panthers held the Irish to five shots and used forwards Alexander Dexter and Bertin Jacquesson to pace the offense, as each scored a goal and tallied an assist.

–          The victory was the second in as many years over a top-five team on the road. Pitt upset No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., 2-0, on Oct. 18, 2019.

–          The victory over Notre Dame was the first regular season opening win for Pitt since 2014.

JACQUESSON, ORDOÑEZ EARN ACC WEEKLY HONORS

–          Freshman Bertin Jacquesson and sophomore Arturo Ordoñez were recognized the by ACC for their efforts against Notre Dame on Sept. 26.

–          In his first career game as a Panther, Jacquesson recorded an assist on the Panthers first goal of 2020 and solidified the 3-1 victory with a goal in the 72nd minute.

–          Ordoñez anchored a back line that allowed only five shots and two shots on goal.

THREE PLAYERS ON TOPDRAWERSOCCER TEAM

–          Three players were named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week for their performances at No. 5 Notre Dame on Sept. 26.

–          Graduate Student goalkeeper Nico Campuzano earned a win in his first career start as a Panther, totaling one save and aiding a defense that allowed Notre Dame to just five shots and two shots on goal.

–          Senior forward Alexander Dexter and freshman forward Bertin Jacquesson both earned spots, with each scoring a goal and recording an assist in the 3-1 victory over the Irish.

THE SERIES

–          The series is tied 9-9-5 all-time, with the last meeting ending in a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sept. 27, 2019.

–          In the last five meetings, the Orange lead the series 2-1-2.

–          The Panthers’ last loss to the Orange came at home on Nov. 2, 2016.

SCOUTING THE ORANGE

–          Syracuse enters the weekday contest 0-0, with their regular season opener against Navy being canceled on Sept. 25.

–          Noteable returners include senior forward Luther Archimede and senior defender Simon Triantafillou. Archimede tallied nine points a season ago, with four goals and an assist to his name. Archimede finished third on the Orange in shots with 31.

–          Triantafillou was named to the 2020 ACC Watch List after scoring two goals and dishing out three assists last year. Triantafillou will anchor a defense that held the opposition to 194 shots in 2019, compared to the 288 the offense totaled.

RECORD WATCH

–          Senior Alexander Dexter is one assist away from tying Dave Reichenbach (1962-1964) and Mark Nigh (1975-78) for second most all-time in school history.

PITT RANKED NO. 2

–          Pitt moved up to No. 2 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Poll on Sept. 29.

–          The number two ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll is the highest ranking in program history (since 1996).

–          Pitt moved from number four to number two after its 3-1 victory over No. 5 Notre Dame on Sept. 26.
