CBA’s Dan McCarthy struggles in first spherical of U.S. Open – syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — DeWitt native Dan McCarthy found Winged Foot Golf Club rough going in the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, shooting a 6-over-par 76.

McCarthy, who competed at CBA and Le Moyne, posted birdies on 11 and 18, bogeys on six, 13, 14 and 16 and double-bogeys on 4 and 12.

This is McCarthy’s second run at a U.S. Open. He qualified for the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and missed the cut after shooting an 80 and a 78 in the first two rounds.

McCarthy earned a spot in this year’s field by finishing fifth on the points list in the three-event Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

McCarthy has a second-round tee time of 2:11 p.m. Friday.
